If you’ve ever been on a long flight, you know it can be absolutely exhausting. The atmospheric pressure decreases, there isn’t as much oxygen available as you are used to, and you have to sit for several hours straight. I often find it hard to get enough water on a plane as well. Often they serve you one glass of water at a time, or they give you a 33 cl bottle with your meal and it’s hard to get more than that. And of course, they don’t allow you to bring a big bottle of water through the safety controls, so if you don’t buy a bottle of water in the tax-free shop, it can be hard to get enough on the plane.
After long flights, I often feel bloated, my skin is super dry and my nose is too. Often my eyes are hurting and I just feel so tired and as far from fresh as you can get. I remember the journey we had when we traveled to New Zealand a couple of years ago. It was an almost 40-hour flight (with 3 stops; London, Singapore, and Sydney) and when we finally landed I felt like a zombie. The way home was even worse (with 4 stops), but then we had learned a few things so we could be better prepared. And I’ve been perfecting my routine on every flight since then. Now, I know how to stay as fresh and hydrated as possible when on a long flight, and for our trip to Bali, I decided to write a blog post about it. I know that many of you guys love traveling, and my travel guides are among the most popular posts on my blog. So, maybe this will help you on your next flight so that you’ll arrive fresh and ready to explore your destination right away.
First, let’s go over my favorite organic skincare products I bring with me on my trips.
Organic Skincare for traveling + how to stay hydrated on a long flight and avoid jetlag | The Nordic Kitchen
- Caudalié Beauty Elixir.
I’ve talked about this product before and I still swear by it. I use this mist (comes in travel size) to hydrate my skin during long flights. - 2 in 1 Black Face Mask by Ann-Marie börlind.
I don’t necessarily use this on the plane, but I love to put it on first thing after arriving at the hotel. A deep cleanse + a hydration boost at the same time.

- Hair Strength Drops by Hjärtligt
My favorite product to use when I’m spending time in the sun and/or swimming in salt water. This oil provides nutrients to the hair and smells heavenly. Just apply it after you’ve washed your hair and your good to go. - Moisturizer by Maria Åkerberg.
Face Lotion Moist has been my favorite face lotion for years now and I use it both at home and when I travel.

- Shampoo and conditioner by Bruns.
I use Bruns shampoo and conditioner normally, so it’s a given that I bring them with me when I travel. I love that their products also come in travel sizes, which makes it easy to take them with you, even if you travel with hand luggage only. For more information about the shampoos, you can read this blog post from the archives. - Dr. Organic Face Serum with marine stem cells.
I got this serum in a press gift a couple of months back and I’ve used it every day since. It’s definitely the best serum I’ve ever tried and I can really see a difference on my face. It contains marine stem cells along with dead sea minerals, aloe vera leaf juice, plant extracts, and herbal oils. It’s organic and vegan and you just apply 1-2 drops on your face and neck after washing. Really nice price too! - Heat Protection by Hjärtligt
Another product I use wherever I am. Helps to protect the hair from heat and since I tend to blow dry my hair way more often when I’m traveling, this product is a must in my bag. Made by the same brand as the hair oil and smells just as lovely. And if you don’t need heat protection, you can still use it just to make your hair smell amazing (been there done that). - Saltwater Spray by Bruns.
A new product from Bruns that also smells absolutely amazing. I’ve been a fan of saltwater spray for 10+ years and the main reason is that it gives the hair a nice texture and makes it less ”shiny”. I’m not much into styling products, but salt water spray I use. Perfect for creating that beach hair wherever you are – close to the ocean or not. Will be in my suitcase from now on for sure!

Now let’s talk about the actual flight. What can you do to stay hydrated and as fresh and well rested as possible? And what can you do to avoid jet lag?
- Stay hydrated and drink water. I know, I just said that it can be very difficult to get water on a plane since the airline companies often aren’t too generous with the amount of water that they serve. My best advice is to:
- Avoid alcohol, caffeine, and soft drinks, since they dehydrate your body even more.
- Try and get your hands on a big bottle of water at the airport, before boarding the plane. Otherwise, ask the cabin crew for water and try to drink one big glass every hour.
- If you can, buy a bottle of fresh coconut water at the airport – it’s full of healthy minerals, and it helps your body maintain the important electrolyte balance, which in turn helps you stay hydrated during your flight.
- Be a picky eater. Snacks can be tempting when you’re on a flight, but try to stay away from salty snacks, since the salt makes you dehydrated. Instead, choose fresh fruit (maybe you can find fruit, fresh juices or even a salad at the airport and bring with you on the plane). Try to find fruits and vegetables rich in water, like cucumber, apples, celery, oranges etc. For some energy, why not make these raw food inspired cashew balls to eat on the plane?
- Skip the makeup. During a long flight, you’ll want to provide your skin with moist every now and then, so avoid putting makeup on. After boarding, I use the Face Lotion Moist on my face and whenever I feel that my skin is becoming drier, I use the Caudalié Beauty Elixir. If it’s a long flight, I apply more of the face lotion. Another option is to put on a face mask, like the 2 in 1 Black Face Mask, to give your skin a real nutrient and moist boost.
- Bring some extra clothes. I always have a scarf or a knitted sweater in my hand luggage. The cabin can be very cold, so some warm clothes to help you stay warm and nice is to recommend. An inflatable neck pillow is also a great idea.
- Let’s move. Whenever you can, take a walk down the airplane aisle. Moving your body helps to keep your circulation up, so a short walk every now and then is a great idea.
- Use earplugs and/or headphones. Bring your headphones if you want to listen to music or watch a movie, and use the earplugs if you want to sleep on the plane.
- Arrive on time. Well, not that you can control the flight’s time schedule or any delays, but that’s not what I’m talking about. What I mean is that, immediately after boarding the plane, you should change your time to that of the destination. If it’s night in the country your about to visit, you should try to sleep on the plane, even if it’s daytime where you live. By switching time zone already on the plane, you’ll minimize the risk of getting jet lagged when you arrive. If you’re landing in the morning, try to get some sleep and you’ll be rested and ready for a new day when you arrive. It has worked for us every time, and even when we traveled to the other side of the world (12 hour time difference) we avoided jetlag completely by changing the time zone on the plane(s).
- Wear comfy clothes. I guess this one is pretty obvious. You don’t want to wear your super skinny jeans for a 12-hour flight, trust me. Oversized is key here, so comfy before classy is my advice. Loungewear is my standard outfit for long flights, it allows me to move around comfortably, it helps against bloating and it’s nice when you’re trying to get some sleep.
- Bring some entertainment! A great book, music, an iPad or whatever you like. You’ll be able to watch movies on the plane, but it’s nice to have a few options.
Bon Voyage!
